Services Use Policy
Michigan State University provides instructional computer
labs and services for use by students, faculty, and staff.
The following policies have been established to provide a
reliable and stable computing environment.
Please adhere to the following policies:
- The MSU instructional computer labs are provided primarily
for academic use by MSU-affiliated individuals including
students, faculty, and staff. Activities not specifically
related to instruction, research, or outreach are considered
recreational. Recreational use of the facilities is limited
to those times when there are no individuals waiting to
use the computers for academic purposes.
- When computer facilities are busy, a 2-hour time limit
is in effect. Shorter limits may be imposed during peak
periods.
- Misuse of instructional computer facilities is subject
to disciplinary action in accordance with Section
5.6.3 of Academic Freedom for Students at MSU as well
as other ordinances. Misuse includes, but is not limited
to: modifications of software, hardware or network connections;
possession of food and/or drink, noise or disruptive behavior.
- Use of tobacco products is prohibited in buildings on
campus.
- Minors must be accompanied by an MSU-affiliated individual.

Services Code of Conduct
Before using a public computer facility:
- Check the schedule
to see if a class is in session.
While using a public computer facility:
- If all the workstations are occupied, be patient and wait
your turn. Be sure to check the availability of other computer
labs as well.
- Be courteous of students that must use the facility for
academic purposes. Academic use has priority. Do not prevent
others from using a workstation when your activity is recreational.
- Be considerate. Do not talk loudly or use programs which
have sound effects that may disturb others in the laboratory.
- To protect the equipment, please enjoy your food and beverages
outside of the computer laboratory.
- Software usage at MSU is regulated by the MSU
Acceptable Use Policy. Do not violate copyright
laws.
- Unauthorized copying is regulated by copyright (17 U.S.
Code Sec. 101). In the event of copyright violations, your
activities may be traced and you may be legally liable.
Before Leaving a Workstation:
- Remove any personal files from the local drive.
- Logout from the computer (click the logout icon on the
desktop).
- Don't turn off the computer.
- Clean up the area around your workstation.
