Macintosh Frequently Asked Questions
General Usage:
Q: I'm done using the machine. How do I log out?
A: On the Dock at the bottom of the screen, there is an icon with a house on it. Click that and it will log you out. Always log out to protect your privacy. If you do not logout anything the next user does could be traced back to you.
Q: I want to use my AFS space (called your "P: drive" on a Windows lab machine). How do I get to it?
A: On the Dock at the bottom of the screen, there is an icon in the shape of a trefoil knot (it is green). Click on that and it will prompt you for your password, and then mount your AFS space on the Desktop.
Q: The Mac is acting strangely. What should I do?
A: All of our Macintosh machines boot from a server in a process called Netboot. In the Netboot environment, there are some settings that carry over from the previous user between logout and login. If you are experiencing strange behavior on the part of the Mac, the best thing to do is to restart the machine. This restores everything to the way the image is on the server.
Applications:
Q: Were are applications located? / Where is ______ application?
A: Applications are located either in the Applications folder or on the File Server. The Applications folder can be accessed by double-clicking on any of the drives on the Desktop - there is a tile on the left that says "Applications". The File Server is also located on the Desktop.
Q: Why isn't the application I am looking for not here?
A: Firstly, we might not provide it, and we did eliminate a few apps when we upgraded from OS9 to OSX. However, we do have an awful lot of applications, but some are location specific. Click here to see a full listing of our Mac apps and their locations.
Q: I want to burn a CD. How can I do that?
A: The application for burning CDs that we have is Roxio's Toast Titanium. It's super easy to use - just click the "New Disc" button at the bottom and drag and drop files into the window. The "Mac OS Extended and PC (Hybrid) CD" option should be automatically selected - this will allow your CD to be read by any computer. If it is not, you can click on the description at the top of the box and select it. When you're done, click the red record button at the bottom. That's it!
Printing:
Q: Do I still need to manually release my print jobs from the queue?
A: No. In OS9 users had to manually release each print job in order for it to print. Now they go automatically. Feel free to take a look at the Print Services page for more information.
The Web:
Q: Where is Internet Explorer?
A: Apple developed their own internet browser called Safari, and it's pretty good. It is located on the dock at the bottom of the screen (the icon looks like a compass). However, if you prefer another browser, we do provide a few others. Check the Applications folder or the File Server for them. We provide the following browsers, depending on location: Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Firefox, Netscape, Opera.
Q: I downloaded a file. Where did it go?
A: Files by default download to a folder "Users/default/Documents/" on your NetBoot drive (the one on your desktop with the globe on it). You can either go there yourself, or you can click on the magnifying glass (in the download window that pops up) next to the name of the file once it has completed downloading. This includes Microsoft Word documents that were linked from a web page.
